Van Belle traces the history of psychology from its roots in Greek philosophy and includes a description of the later influence of the Hebraic-Christian mindset on that history. Subsequently, he follows the journey of psychology through the Middle Ages and the scientific revolution of the sixteenth century. Next, he describes the birth and trajectory of psychology proper during the nineteenth century and closes with a description of a number of the more contemporary schools of psychological thought. SummaryIn the early 1950s, Albert Schweitzer was a heroic figure, arguably second only to Albert Einstein in renown. Today, many have scarcely heard of him and know nothing of his work as a medical missionary in Equatorial Africa, or of his receipt of the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize. Schweitzer's genius flourished when he felt he was able to operate between cultures. Convinced that he was uniquely able to mediate between opposites, whether it was between France and Germany, Jews (...) and Christians, or Western and Eastern spirituality, Schweitzer was a tantalising figure, hovering on the verge of what we would today call ‘cross-cultural’ dialogue. Here I will examine his intellectual and ethical trajectory, and explore how his reaction to Africa produced an early liberation that stalled due to his inability to engage deeply with Africans and their culture. As the decades passed, he was increasingly cut adrift both from Europe and from changing currents within Africa, and became strangely absorbed in Indian thought, creatively christianising the notion of ‘ahimsa’ (non-violence) to construct his ‘reverence for life’. In an attempt to create his ‘ethical personality’, he ultimately constructed a colony within a colony, his work frozen in formulations which had been novel prior to World War I. (shrink)

How does talk work, and can we engage the public in a dialogue about the scientific study of talk? This article presents a history, critical evaluation and empirical illustration of the public science of talk. We chart the public ethos of conversation analysis that treats talk as an inherently public phenomenon and its transcribed recordings as public data. We examine the inherent contradictions that conversation analysis is simultaneously obscure yet highly cited; it studies an object that people understand intuitively, yet (...) routinely produces counter-intuitive findings about talk. We describe a novel methodology for engaging the public in a science exhibition event and show how our ‘conversational rollercoaster’ used live recording, transcription and public-led analysis to address the challenge of demonstrating how talk can become an informative object of scientific research. We conclude by encouraging researchers not only to engage in a public dialogue but also to find ways to actively engage people in taking a scientific approach to talk as a pervasive, structural feature of their everyday lives. Rosenthal when he became managing editor in 1969; and an article by former Knight?Ridder executive Don Carter. Recurring themes include an emphasis on gathering and reporting news with accuracy, objectivity, truthfulness, and completeness. In addition, Harris led the way with his promises to correct errors when they occur and to allay false rumors and replace them with substantive information. The present paper deals with the issue of some mutual dependencies between science and philosophy. It turns out that it is not possible easily to separate these two disciplines. All the great physical theories are entangled with notions and ideas which belong to the domain of philosophy. It is well known from the history of science that such notions and ideas very often were an important stimulus that pushed a scholar toward some strictly scientific problem and made him start working (...) on a physical theory which would allow to solve this problem. This subject matter is presented in the article in the context of scientific as well as philosophical achievements of Albert Einstein. It is shown that some philosophical ideas considerably influenced the process of formation of his relativity theory and of his first cosmological model. Special attention is paid to the so called Mach’s Principle, which is a postulate concerning the relativity of mass, and to the idea of staticity of the universe which caused Einstein to change his field equations in such a way that they would produce a static model of the universe. Smolin schreibt dazu, dass es doch wirklich sonderbar anmute, dass schon seit 1927 eine realistische Version der QMexistierte, diese aber noch immer nicht ihren Weg in die Lehrbücher gefunden habe. Und in dieser Version gab es sowohl Wellen als auch Teilchen.

Following his tour with Cohan & Harris’s Minstrels in 1908–1909, Julian Eltinge secured work opening for the popular Scottish comedian, singer, and raconteur Harry Lauder. The tour was demanding and Lauder, an uncloseted homophobe, grew miffed at Eltinge’s popularity. Perhaps the biggest development at this time, however, was producer Albert Herman Woods’s involvement in Julian Eltinge’s career. In 1910, the actor appeared in the Woods’s The Fascinating Widow, a “comedy with music,” written specially for Eltinge. The show made (...) both Woods and Eltinge more popular, wealthy, and famous than they’d ever been. The Fascinating Widow cast Eltinge as a man forced by circumstances to take on a woman’s role in order to wrangle whatever contrivances the plot threw his way. Albert Einstein's bold assertion of the form-invariance of the equation of a spherical light wave with respect to inertial frames of reference became, in the space of six years, the preferred foundation of his theory of relativity. Early on, however, Einstein's universal light-sphere invariance was challenged on epistemological grounds by Henri Poincaré, who promoted an alternative demonstration of the foundations of relativity theory based on the notion of a light-ellipsoid. Drawing in part on archival sources, this paper shows how (...) an informal, international group of physicists, mathematicians, and engineers, including Einstein, Paul Langevin, Poincaré, Hermann Minkowski, Ebenezer Cunningham, Harry Bateman, Otto Berg, Max Planck, Max Laue, A. O presente artigo apresenta como temática de reflexão a influência gastronômica da cozinha portuguesa na culinária do Japão, fato que remete ao intercâmbio cultural que envolveu os dois países ainda no século XVI. O objetivo da pesquisa consiste em evidenciar elementos da culinária portuguesa que foram culturalmente integrados à gastronomia japonesa e que influenciaram na adoção de técnicas e práticas culinárias que favorecem o aproveitamento integral dos alimentos Trata-se de uma temática relevante, visto que as cozinhas portuguesa e brasileira estão (...) fortemente entranhadas e após o fluxo migratório registrado no início do século XX também a culinária japonesa se fundiria no Brasil com elementos próprios, cujos benefícios já se pode visualizar. Para alcançar tal objetivo foi necessário realizar uma retrospectiva histórica que esclarece a influência cultural lusitana entre os japoneses após os primeiros contatos entre os dois povos. A culinária desenvolverá, a partir das técnicas herdadas dos portugueses, receitas que visam especialmente o aproveitamento integral dos alimentos evitando o desperdício que desencadeia prejuízos econômicos, sociais e ambientais. A metodologia utilizada na pesquisa tem caráter qualitativo e se caracteriza pela técnica da pesquisa bibliográfica. (shrink)

Eukaryotic genome DNA is wrapped around core histones and forms a nucleosome structure. Together with associated proteins and RNAs, these nucleosomes are organized three‐dimensionally in the cell as chromatin. Emerging evidence demonstrates that chromatin consists of rather irregular and variable nucleosome arrangements without the regular fiber structure and that its dynamic behavior plays a critical role in regulating various genome functions. Single‐nucleosome imaging is a promising method to investigate chromatin behavior in living cells. It reveals local chromatin motion, which reflects (...) chromatin organization not observed in chemically fixed cells. The motion data is like a gold mine. Data analyses from many aspects bring us more and more information that contributes to better understanding of genome functions. In this review article, we describe imaging of single‐nucleosomes and their tracked behavior through oblique illumination microscopy. We also discuss applications of this technique, especially in elucidating nucleolar organization in living cells. (shrink)

The debate over patriotic education in Japan is marked by power shifts between the two different political groups that have different views of the role of patriotic education. By analyzing the power shift from a historical perspective, this essay makes a point that one of the problems of the debate over patriotic education in Japan is that the debate has never been discussed in terms of the conception of patriotism.

Challenging the public dichotomy characterizing fathers as “involved” or “absentee,” we investigate racial variation in college men’s perceptions of their paternal relationships and the gendered constructions these promote. The analysis draws on intensive interviews (n = 76) with Asian American, Black, and white sons from one university and survey data (n = 1,576) from 24 institutions. In both data sets, Asian Americans and Blacks describe greater paternal distance than do whites. This conceals variations in sons’ understanding of fathers. Asian Americans (...) often criticize their fathers’ distance, disidentifying with the near-exclusive focus on breadwinning they describe among fathers. In contrast, Blacks and whites normalize and identify with their dads. Blacks emphasize the “laid-back,” “cool” masculinity their dads impart, while whites often emphasize the independent masculinity based on mentorship and friendship their dads offer. Recasting sociological theories, we argue these differences emanate from divergent structural contexts, but more importantly, cultural conceptions of fatherhood, race, and gender as well as public discussions that valorize white models of fatherhood. This article is an attempt to develop the idea of peace education for adults through the assumption that, compared to peace education for children, educational approaches for adults are as yet undeveloped. This article also assumes that the progress of educational approaches for adults is necessary to the further development of peace education for children, as well as to the expansion of the theory. In navigating the argument around issues of peace education for adults, the article uses the example of (...) educational issues faced by Amerasians in Okinawa. The article argues that language education is a fundamental aspect of peace education for adults. It also demonstrates that the content of language education for adults is different from the content of language education for children. Furthermore, the article defends peace education for adults, through language education, as the very first step towards creating peaceful conditions for the education of Amerasians in Okinawa.
